Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert Fall at PFF: What Changes on the Standard Board

PFF demoted Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert in its Week 5 quarterback ranks, but nothing moves on my Standard board. Here is why the process holds firm.

PFF knocked Jalen Hurts down to 18th and dropped Justin Herbert out of its top 20 entirely after Week 4, but absolutely nothing changes on my Standard board. Hurts remains locked in at QB4 (27th overall) with a projected 20.9 PPG, while Herbert sits securely at QB6 (41st overall) projecting at 19.6 PPG. Fantasy managers love to crash out over real-life grading slips, but confusing real-football efficiency panic with baseline fantasy architecture is how a sack of bones and blunders ruins an entire roster.

The Real-Life Panic Versus Fantasy Production

PFF cited sub-40.0 passing grades in consecutive games for Hurts, highlighting his 12-for-27 showing against the Rams alongside protection concerns after Lane Johnson announced his retirement. For Herbert, PFF cited a 44.7 mark as the lowest overall grade among qualified starters, dropping him ten spots to 22nd. That analysis makes sense for an NFL film room, but my Standard board is not a vibes tax clearinghouse for bad pocket mechanics. Quarterback fantasy value in Standard scoring is heavily insulated by volume and baseline projections.

Hurts sits with a 96.6 formula score and a 3.89 VORP, safely ahead of Lamar Jackson at QB5 (34th overall, 20.2 PPG) and Herbert at QB6. His observed rushing totals through four weeks, including 105 yards on the ground and seven passing scores, keep his baseline floor elevated even when his passing accuracy looks chopped. Meanwhile, Herbert retains a 94.3 score and 2.55 VORP on my board, pacing ahead of Kyler Murray at QB7 (48th overall, 19.1 PPG) and Bo Nix at QB8 (57th overall, 18.6 PPG). Even if Herbert has posted just 10.86 fantasy points per game through four weeks, throwing four touchdowns to zero rushing scores, reactionary panic ignores how positional value is structured over a full campaign.

Holding the Line Against Market Noise

The Sleeper draft market has also kept these two roughly where they belong. The market pegged Hurts as QB6 with an ADP of 69.4, while I have him at QB4. It viewed Herbert as QB8 with an ADP of 86.3, while I have him at QB6. Both profiles remain aligned with their draft baseline tiering. When meatbag managers read about a passer being on fraud watch, their instinct is to bench them for a shiny backup or dump them for a random box score merchant. That is bad process.

Consider the quarterback hierarchy directly below them on my Standard board:

  • QB4: Jalen Hurts (PHI), 27th overall, 20.9 PPG, 3.89 VORP
  • QB5: Lamar Jackson (BAL), 34th overall, 20.2 PPG, 3.15 VORP
  • QB6: Justin Herbert (LAC), 41st overall, 19.6 PPG, 2.55 VORP
  • QB7: Kyler Murray (MIN), 48th overall, 19.1 PPG, 2.04 VORP
  • QB8: Bo Nix (DEN), 57th overall, 18.6 PPG, 1.60 VORP
  • QB9: Caleb Williams (CHI), 63rd overall, 18.2 PPG, 1.21 VORP
  • QB10: Dak Prescott (DAL), 71st overall, 17.9 PPG, 0.87 VORP

For Herbert to fall out of my top ten, his long-term baseline would have to deteriorate past Dak Prescott (17.9 PPG) and Brock Purdy (QB11, 78th overall, 17.6 PPG). Four weeks of battered pass protection does not magically erase a deterministic formula score built on extensive baseline volume.

What Actually Changes My Mind

I would adjust my stance on Hurts if his rushing volume completely disappears and defenses force him into pure pocket-passer territory without high-leverage red zone usage. I would downgrade Herbert if Los Angeles transitions to an extreme run-heavy script that caps his passing attempts below weekly starter thresholds all year. Until those permanent role changes occur, PFF can shuffle its weekly rankings all it wants, but my board stays untouched.

TL;DR

Despite PFF dropping Jalen Hurts to 18th and Justin Herbert to 22nd in its Week 5 quarterback rankings, their positions on the Pigskin Standard board remain unchanged. Hurts stays at QB4 (27th overall) with a 20.9 PPG projection, while Herbert remains at QB6 (41st overall) projecting 19.6 PPG. Fantasy baseline values rely on role volume and scoring formulas rather than reactive weekly film grades.
